Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa
Arrive at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, where you will be welcomed by our representative and transferred to your hotel. After a brief rest, embark on an afternoon city tour of Ethiopia’s bustling capital. Visit the National Museum, home to the world-famous fossil “Lucy,” and learn about Ethiopia’s ancient history. Continue to the Ethnological Museum for an introduction to the country’s diverse cultures, followed by a visit to the Holy Trinity Cathedral, an architectural marvel and significant religious site. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Ethiopian dinner accompanied by live music and cultural dance. Overnight stay in Addis Ababa.
Day 2: Addis Ababa – Arba Minch (Flight/Drive)
After breakfast, depart for Arba Minch, either by a scenic domestic flight or via a drive through Ethiopia’s beautiful southern landscapes. Upon arrival, check in to your lodge overlooking Lake Chamo and Lake Abaya. In the afternoon, take a relaxing boat cruise on Lake Chamo, where you can spot crocodiles basking in the sun, hippos in the shallows, and a variety of bird species. The backdrop of the surrounding hills and forests makes for breathtaking scenery. In the evening, enjoy dinner at the lodge, surrounded by nature’s tranquility. Overnight stay in Arba Minch.
Day 3: Arba Minch – Konso – Jinka
Today’s journey begins with a visit to the Konso Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Konso people are renowned for their terraced farming methods, stone-walled villages, and vibrant traditions. Explore a local village and meet community members who will share insights into their daily life and agricultural techniques. Continue driving through the rolling hills and picturesque countryside toward Jinka, the gateway to the Omo Valley. Along the way, stop at small markets and roadside settlements for authentic glimpses of rural Ethiopia. Upon arrival in Jinka, check in to your lodge and rest for the evening. Overnight stay in Jinka.
Day 4: Jinka – Mursi Village – Turmi
After an early breakfast, head into Mago National Park to visit the Mursi tribe, famous for their distinctive lip plates worn by women and elaborate body scarification practices. Engage in respectful cultural interactions, take photographs with permission, and learn about the meanings behind their traditions. Continue your journey to Turmi, home of the Hamar people, known for their intricate hairstyles, colorful beadwork, and the unique bull-jumping ceremony (seasonal). Upon arrival, enjoy a guided walk through the village and witness the rhythm of daily life. Evening cultural dance performances may be arranged depending on the local schedule. Overnight stay in Turmi.
Day 5: Turmi – Karo & Dassanech Villages
This morning, drive to the banks of the Omo River to visit the Karo tribe, celebrated for their intricate body and face paintings, often done with white chalk for ceremonies and festivals. Capture stunning photographs of the Karo people set against the dramatic river views. Later, proceed to the Dassanech village near the Kenyan border. The Dassanech are semi-nomadic pastoralists with a distinctive cultural identity shaped by life along the Omo River delta. Return to Turmi in the late afternoon and enjoy free time to relax at your lodge. Dinner and overnight stay in Turmi.
Day 6: Turmi – Arbore Village – Arba Minch
Depart Turmi after breakfast and travel through scenic valleys to reach the Arbore tribe’s village. The Arbore people are known for their graceful appearance, traditional clothing, and rich oral traditions. Spend time learning about their customs before continuing toward Arba Minch. Along the way, enjoy views of lush greenery, rural farmlands, and occasional wildlife sightings. Upon arrival in Arba Minch, check in to your lodge and enjoy your final evening in the Omo Valley region. Overnight stay in Arba Minch.
Day 7: Arba Minch – Addis Ababa & Departure
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your return flight to Addis Ababa. On arrival, enjoy free time for last-minute shopping at local craft markets, where you can find handmade jewelry, woven textiles, and traditional carvings. If time permits, visit Mount Entoto for panoramic views of the city. In the evening, you will be transferred to the airport for your onward journey, marking the end of your Hidden Tribes of Ethiopia Tour. Depart with a heart full of memories and a deeper understanding of Ethiopia’s living heritage.
