Day 1: Arrival in Cotonou - Your Benin adventure begins as you arrive at Cotonou Cadjehoun International Airport. Upon arrival, our representative will warmly welcome you and assist with your transfer to your hotel. Take time to relax after your journey and get acquainted with the vibrant atmosphere of Cotonou, Benin’s economic capital. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner featuring local Beninese cuisine and a brief orientation about the week ahead. Overnight stay in Cotonou.
Day 2: Cotonou – Ganvié – Cotonou - After breakfast, embark on an exciting excursion to Ganvié, famously known as the “Venice of Africa.” This lake village, built entirely on stilts, offers a fascinating glimpse into the lifestyle of the Tofinu people, who sought refuge here centuries ago. Glide along narrow waterways in a pirogue (canoe) and witness everyday life on the water – floating markets, fishermen at work, and vibrant community scenes. Return to Cotonou for lunch, followed by an afternoon city tour. Visit the lively Dantokpa Market, explore the Fondation Zinsou art museum, and admire the blend of colonial and modern architecture. Overnight stay in Cotonou.
Day 3: Cotonou – Ouidah - Today, travel to Ouidah, a town rich in history and spiritual heritage. Begin your exploration at the Python Temple, a sacred site for followers of the Voodoo religion. Continue to the Ouidah Museum of History, located in an old Portuguese fort, where you’ll learn about Benin’s role in the transatlantic slave trade. Walk along the poignant Route des Esclaves (Slave Route) leading to the Gate of No Return, a memorial to those who were taken across the Atlantic. In the evening, immerse yourself in local traditions with a cultural performance of music and dance. Overnight stay in Ouidah.
Day 4: Ouidah – Abomey - After breakfast, drive to Abomey, the historic capital of the Dahomey Kingdom. Visit the Royal Palaces of Abomey, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that tells the story of a powerful kingdom that thrived between the 17th and 19th centuries. The museum here showcases royal artifacts, thrones, and intricate bas-reliefs depicting scenes of war and daily life. Later, stroll through local craft markets to shop for handmade souvenirs and interact with artisans. In the evening, enjoy storytelling sessions from local elders about the kings and queens of Dahomey. Overnight stay in Abomey.
Day 5: Abomey – Dassa Zoumé - Today’s journey takes you to Dassa Zoumé, a town surrounded by beautiful hills and known for its strong Christian heritage and sacred sites. Visit the pilgrimage site of Our Lady of Arigbo Basilica, one of Benin’s most important religious landmarks. Explore the surrounding landscapes dotted with caves and grottoes that are steeped in local legends. In the afternoon, meet local villagers and learn about their daily lives, agricultural practices, and traditional cooking methods. Overnight stay in Dassa Zoumé.
Day 6: Dassa Zoumé – Porto-Novo – Cotonou - After breakfast, head towards Porto-Novo, the official capital of Benin. Explore the Ethnographic Museum, showcasing Benin’s cultural diversity, and the beautiful Grand Mosque with its Brazilian-inspired architecture. Visit the King Toffa’s Palace Museum, which offers fascinating insights into Porto-Novo’s royal history. Enjoy a relaxed lunch before continuing back to Cotonou. Spend the evening at leisure, perhaps revisiting the markets for last-minute shopping or enjoying the city’s vibrant nightlife. Overnight stay in Cotonou.
Day 7: Departure from Cotonou - After a hearty breakfast, enjoy some free time for personal activities or a short city stroll before your transfer to Cotonou Cadjehoun International Airport. Bid farewell to Benin with cherished memories of its warm people, rich history, and colorful culture.
